Not only an interesting Vietnam war story, this is a tribute to hard work and unselfishly giving oneself to otheres in support of one's beliefs. Dr Smith is the epitomy of an American hero.
I was fortunate to have met the author of "Chicken Smith" in Houston last April 8, 2011. We had joined 12 other Vietnam Vets at the Wild Cajun Restaurant for the 40th anniversary of the bombing of the CBC Bar in Saigon, (pages 128-131) which killed 2 and wounded more than 20--including an Army Ranger who was impaled through the back by a piece of flying rebar.

Mark's book really took me back to my time in Nam and those days so long ago in Saigon. If you are a veteran, or someone who seeks and/or admires adventure, then get this book. It's like sitting across the kitchen table from Mark as he shares his story from the early days in Marine Corps Bootcamp--and later sent to Vietnam as part of a combat unit..eventually returning to Saigon as a civilian newspaper reporter. But Mark's road doesn't end there,
his adventures continue on to North Africa, Nicaragua, and Iraq. It was a great read Mark, thanks for sharing your remarkable journey!

Great book from a "hometown" veteran. It was an interesting read, and brought back some memories, when reading about people that I know.
Excellent read! I couldn't put it down.
I love this book because it's so real and written straight from Dr.Smith's mouth. This is my third time reading this.

Great book from a great guy. I went to high school with Mark and he was fun to be around. I don't think any of us back then would have believed what he has accomplished in his life.
